What is the different in Synthetic motor oil then regular motor oil?

What is the different in Synthetic motor oil then regular motor oil? If I use Synthetic oil, can I go back to normal motor oil later on in the future? I got a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 engine.What is the different in Synthetic motor oil then regular motor oil?
Synthetic oils for gasoline engines in North America are mainly made of base oils which are PAO or polyalphaolefins or Group IIIs. There are many other types of synthetics however but the two are the most common. Compared to mineral oils, synthetics offer better high temperature resistance and significant low temperature flow properties so they are the preferred choices in severe operating environments. NASCAR and Formula 1 cars mostly use synthetics because of the reasons I mentioned. The use of synthetics actually started in aviation when planes flew higher and faster and the temperature conditions became extremely severe. Its application spread to other sectors from automotive to industrial.





If you have used synthetics before and want to go back to regular mineral type of oils, you can do so because these modern automotve oil formulations are designed to allow good compatibilities between these oil categories. Any mechanic who tells you not to switch back from synthetic to mineral or vice versa belongs to the old school. The fact is it is now a myth although many years ago they had those problems. But why shitch back to mineral oils, they are inferior to synthetics anyway? Mixing the two is fine however you do not get optimum benefits of the synthetic properties. Synthetic oil is more stable at extreme temperature changes. It also have a higher flash point, meaning it will burn at a higher temperature then regular oil. That's why they were first used on jet engines. You can always switch back, or even mix it. You'll see it on some oil bottle. It says synthetic blend or fully synthetic. One other thing is that, year it cost more, but you can go twice the distance, meaning less oil change.
the major difference is the molecule size. the size is much smaller for synthetic oil thus it can get into places that conventional oils can't reach and can withstand higher temps than conventional ! i would never switch back to conventional oil after using synthetic mainly because of the lack of protection regular oil has. i have been using synthetics for over twenty years and have saved many internal parts in all my vehicles due to the superior lubricating qualities of synthetic oils !

For bike owners though my understanding is that you cannot switched back with a bike that has a wet clutch. Just wanted to add that for any bikers lurking.





I've extended my oil change intervals using sythetics and have had no problems in over 50k miles. Keeps things running a bit cooler too.
synthetic lubricates better and you can go double your mileage between oil changes and yes you can switch back to regular oil any time you want.
