Used motor oil is considered a hazardous substance -- there are several carcinogens that form as oil is subjected to the stresses of engine lubrication. Fairly consistent contact with used motor oil is linked to scrotal and lung cancer, as well as a skin cancers.

Why not just use something that's both safe and effective for these purposes, instead of contaminating soil and groundwater? Send the used oil back for re-refining.Will motor oil work like a water sealent and keep wood from roting?kill termites?
use white lithium grease Report Abuse
Read my other answer.
Oil is a pollutant when ever it rains it will leach into the ground.
Better and cheaper to buy a sealant like Thompsons.
yes. my father used that too.
Yes it will work, I have soaked fence posts in old oil to extend their life, in my opinion its less toxic than treatments sold to kill termites, wood worm and fungus.
I dont think that the DNR (Department of Natural Resorces) would like that too much. But then again they might because they could give you a fine for that! I would never recomend oil as a sealant!!!!!!!
Home Depot sells a relatively inexpensive product you can use that is an EPA registered product called fence %26amp; post preservative that will do exactly what you are looking to do. You can also use a product called termin-8 by jasco.
Motor oil is a pollutant when used improperly, such as a water sealant.
Just purchase and use the proper chemical for the job. It doesn't take much motor oil, to ruin the drinking water for man or beast.
