How do I switch from conventional motor oil to full synthetic in a high mileage Civic?

My wife has a 1998 Civic, which is running strong with about 120k miles. I've been thinking that I'd like to switch the motor oil over to a synthetic, but I've heard stories from people that it can be tricky. From what I understand, a simple switch from conventional motor oil to synthetic can cause a loss in power and it could unseat the piston seals.

My question is this: how would I go about switching this car from conventional motor oil to full synthetic?

I have an idea, but I'd like some others' feedback. If I were to start by using one quart synthetic, 3 quarts conventional (the same brand, same weight) for an oil change. The next would be 2 and 2. After that, I'd do 3 quarts synthetic, one quart conventional. Finally, a full synthetic oil change.

I could be way over analyzing this. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I understand the basics. How do I switch from conventional motor oil to full synthetic in a high mileage Civic?
Just drain all the old oil out and get a new filter and add the synthetic is all you have to do, DON'T mix regular oil with synthetic, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever unless your car uses oil or leaks it as if it does it will use it or leak it a lot faster. How do I switch from conventional motor oil to full synthetic in a high mileage Civic?
You can safely switch back and forth from regular to synthetic oils.

The reason you sometimes hear about leakage problems following a switch to synthetic oils is that sludge build-up sometimes occurs inside engines and the detergents in synthetic oil helps clean out that sludge. That can reveal previously covered dried out or deformed seals which results in an external leak or leaks.
You can safely drain the old oil and replace the oil filter. Top up with the synthetic oil and she will run fine. There are no adverse effects while switching from conventional to synthetic oils. If this would have been the case, the manufacturers would have printed warnings on the oil containers.
All you do is a standard oil change. Synthetics and regular oil are fully compatible.

There is a long article available that was done by consumer reports that showed no benefit at all to using synthetic. It also showed no benefit to changing oil at 3,000 miles. It was a really interesting article. As a result, I switched back to the factory recommended oil change interval and just used the proper grade of oil for the season.

My Accord, which has since been sold to a friend, has over 300,000 miles on it without the engine ever having been opened except for routine maintenance. It is still running strong.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you can spend $10.00 per quart for Amsoil Synthetic and change every 3,000 miles, or just use whatever is on sale at Walmart and change it every 6,000 miles. Neither approach is better or worse than the other.

Look up the article and the methodology behind the study. It was good information.

They also tested various oil additives and found them to offer essentially no benefit at all.
';From what I understand, a simple switch from conventional motor oil to synthetic can cause a loss in power and it could unseat the piston seals.';

';If I were to start by using one quart synthetic, 3 quarts conventional (the same brand, same weight) for an oil change.';

On both counts, unfortunately you are wrong.

The first thing I am going to say is, whoever told you that changing oil could ';unseat the piston seals'; knows absolutely nothing about engines, please stop listening to their advice. The closest thing I could think of to what a 'piston seal' could possibly be would be the (compression) piston rings. These are never secured directly to the piston in the first place, they move inside the ring grooves and seal by spring tension against the cylinder, and contact against the sides of the ring grooves.

As far as ';same brand, same weight';, I can buy two 1 gallon plastic bottles of oil from the same company, that are both the same weight, they even look the same, but they are for COMPLETELY different purposes, and have widely different characteristics. When changing between mineral and synthetic oils, there is no need to do it in steps, you drain one, and fill up with the other (obviously changing filters at the same time, never re-use a filter element).

With regards to your engine, there is no good reason to change to synthetic oil now, you will notice no difference to fuel consumption, power, or quality of operation. If you want to waste money, go right ahead. If you don't, then keep using the standard oil until the car dies in another 100,000 miles.
How can using synthetic oil do all you explain here??? People tend to make everything complicated. Oil is oil, whetherr synthetic or regular mineral oil. The only differencee is that synthetic oil lasts much longer, since it is more stable and takes longer to oxidize (break down). As long as you use the right viscosity and change oil at the manufacturer's specified intervals, you should be good to go.

Oil cannot unseat pistons - never heard of it before now - who told you this? On older engines, people sometimes use higher viscosity oil to reduce oil consumption, but that is not recommended by the manufacturers - I would stick to the specified oil (by the manufacturer), unless it REALLY uses (or burns) a LOT of oil - blue smoke whenever you pull away.

Can I use regular HD 30 motor oil in a four stroke pressure washer?

The instruction manual of the Honda GC190 motor mention to use 10W-30 or 30 four stroke oil, but it is not available in the stores. Can I use regular motor oil instead for the pressure washer. Can I use regular HD 30 motor oil in a four stroke pressure washer?
h.d. is regular oil . h.d. stands for high detergent it has a cleaning agent added to it . To answer your question it wont hurt but it can void your warranty. When i tried to get Honda to fix my a.t.v.under warranty the first thing they wonted was serves records and oil purchase recipe. I did not keep receipt, did not get a.t.v. fixed. That's a fact. If you are under warranty stick to m.s..Can I use regular HD 30 motor oil in a four stroke pressure washer?
It shouldn't hurt, they do recommend the best oil for their product, but it also depends on the climate in where you live.

There isn't that much difference in those oils, and if doesn't get too cold, where you live, it won't make much difference.

See if Honda has a Q%26amp;A site, to check for sure.
30 weight 4 stroke oil is a HD-30 weight. Perfectly fine..... castrol, pennzoil to havoline and inbetween is fine (as long as its a name brand oil of course) you could also feel at rest (and have a little longer lasting engine) and run either 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic in it. For the pump.... should use ND-30, or non detergent 30 weight.... (it doesn't need detergents to keep it clean)
No problem at all.
yes, won't hurt it.

What type of motor oil to use for a 4 stroke 50 cc moped?

anyone know, i dont have to owners manual. and cust service is useless because its a pos chinese bike. What type of motor oil to use for a 4 stroke 50 cc moped?
10w-40 should work. What type of motor oil to use for a 4 stroke 50 cc moped?
most small engines like that in mowers and go carts use strait weight oil, like a 10 or 20. not 10w20 or anything like that, go to the lawn and garnen section of any store to find it. 10 is thinner and engine will be hotter( good for winter) 20 is thicker and will run cooler, and rob some horse power but it is better for summer.
most every moped made uses the same basic 2 in 1 cycle oil used in some garden tools just pick some up at your local hardware type store, they'll know what you're looking for;it's basically a mixture of that oil to whatever gallon or so of gas as per instructions.

Experiment to determine the viscosity of motor oil using the method of falling sphere?

in the above experiment, why is that the sphere should be cleaned.also what would the presence of (a)temperature variation and(b) bubbles in the oil do to the accuracy of the experiment. Also for the purpose of the experiment, what complication is caused by a tube of finite dimensions being used to contain the oil instead of using a container of finite dimension.Experiment to determine the viscosity of motor oil using the method of falling sphere?
Particles on the ball add additional friction.

Temperature may change the viscosity e.g.; molasses.

Bubbles change (reduce) the viscosity of the fluid.

A lot of bubbles will also introduce the possibility that the ball will follow the path of least resistance and not fall straight down. This will screw up your measurements because the distance traveled by the ball will not be a constant factor.

.Experiment to determine the viscosity of motor oil using the method of falling sphere?
The falling sphere is acted upon by a constant force (gravity) and viscous friction. If the sphere is not clean you cannot use it as a standard because there is no standard dirt. In most liquids, viscous friction varies with temperature, so the speed of falling will vary. It should be obvious that falling through air is faster than falling through the liquid, so bubbles will cause the sphere to fall faster.

When the sphere falls in a tube, the liquid has to move from below the sphere to above it. This is work which will be subtracted from the energy of the falling sphere thus slowing it. In an infinite container the liquid is pushed aside which is less work.

I s there any benefit to change from a natural oil to a synthetic motor oil in a new car?

After the first oil change, which was done after approximately 4 months I switched to a synthetic.I s there any benefit to change from a natural oil to a synthetic motor oil in a new car?
There is no harm in switch to synthetic. I work in an automotive repair shop and we're switching most all cars to synthetic oil. Blends are no good since they are not truely synthetic anyway.

If you rationalize the cost of changing your oil every 3K with mineral oil versus every 7.5K (our recommendation) with synthetic oil, not only is it cheaper, but think about how much LESS waste oil you are producing! Along with the time you save by not having to take your car to the shop. Just be sure that you are getting a true synthetic. I recommend Mobil 1. It's the best there is.

ALSO, be sure to check your oil every thousand miles or so. Even new cars will burn oil occasionally and when you have 7.5K between changes, you may need to top it up!I s there any benefit to change from a natural oil to a synthetic motor oil in a new car?
In a new car, my first consideration is to maintain the powertrain warranty. So I would make sure I was obeying the oil type and change requirements in the manual. You might have your oil changed at the dealer for the first year until your sure that the engine won't have an early parts failure. Many dealers are using at least a synthetic blend in their normal oil changes (like Ford). Later on, the synthetic advantage is superior engine protection and extended oil change intervals.
not entirely, no. its design is to handle a longer period of time between oil changes, not really to improve power or anything like that. as far as the rising cost of oil, i would have stayed with regular oil. it should be changed quarterly - especially in a new car. you don't want to void your warranty. also i would contact your warranty provider to see if you have voided by adding synthetic. what made you decide to change it to that anyways?

Can too much motor oil cause the car to be non runnable?

What is the damage of using too much motor oil and can it break down a car?Can too much motor oil cause the car to be non runnable?
Dodge Man is ABSOLUTELY correct! Can too much motor oil cause the car to be non runnable?
It generally won't hurt the engine if it is not overfilled by too much. If the oil level is high enough it can cause the crankshaft to whip the oil into a foam and cause poor lubrication inside the engine.
    Yes
    yes
    check oil pump..
it would smoke real bad .to much transmission fluid would harm your car it will make the transmission slip or the motor want pull.
Too much oil causes the oil to reach the bottom of the crankshaft. This will 'whip' the oil similar to whipping an egg. The oil will foam, rise to the top of the engine and get into the rotating parts. Oil foam will not lubricate the way liquid oil does and the engine will lock up. Basically too much oil causes the same kind of harm as too little oil.
yes it can ,,among the damage it can do is ,,it will blow a lot of oil seal,s,,and you will have lot,s of leak,s,,also if it get,s high enough in the engine,,it can pump up more than it need,s and cause the plug,s to foul out,,also i have seen them blow oil out the dipstick tube,,and make a real mess,,seen one burn up over it,,so if you have over-filled it,,drain some back out,,it,s better to be a little low on oil,,than to have to much,,i do this for a living,,hope this help,s you.
Over filling can cause oil concumption. The best thing is to drain the oil and refill. If this just hapened you reuse the oiland change the oil filter. However, if the oil has been in for a while drain down to one quart below. Obtain a good five quarts of synthetic oil, one can of engine flush and an EA type oil filter.

Procedure: 1. add can of engine flush to old oil.

    2. start engine run at high idle (1100 rpm) for ten minutes.

    3. assemble new oil with filter prepare to drain old oil.

    4. Shut engine off.

    5. Drain oil and remove and replace filter.

    6. with the drain plug removed pour 1/4 quart new oil. check if oil is clear. If so reinstal plug with 30lbs torque no more.

wipe dipstick and put in four quarts and check level.

    7. if level is at the mark, start engine untill oil light goes out checking for leaks. If there are none the engine is okay, synthetic will find the blown seals caused by overfilling because it is highly penetrating.

    8. shut engine off and wait fifteen minutes to recheck the level.

    9. The best time to chec the oil is after the engine has been down for eight hours. Only add enough oil bring it to the mark.

AMSOIL has a product selection guide and oil capacity online. Yours might be 4.4 quarts.

Which kind of motor oil to use?

I have a 2005 Z71 Tahoe 5.3 L Vortec. I have always used 5-30 oil as it inticates to do on the top of the oil cap and the owners manual.

I understand that the numbers on the oil are for different driving conditions and temperatures. I think?!?

I have always lived in an area of moderate outside air temperatures, no extreme cold or hot weather.

I am now living in an area in CA that average summer highs are 95-105+ degrees. So my question is.... Should I change to a different weight? Or does it not matter if I'm using a Synthetic?

Let me know cause I'm about ready to change my oil in the next few days and it's already getting hot!Which kind of motor oil to use?
Stick to the 5-30 unless you want to void your warranty. The ambient air temperature is nothing compared to the internal engine temps.Which kind of motor oil to use?
Stick with 5-30, you always want to use the type of oil that is recommended on the oil cap. I use Mobile and in my opinion is the best brand. But it all depends on how much you love your vehicle. Also 5-30 is best because if you think about it when that oil is inside the engine you want that oil to go and hit everywhere and everything which 5-30 is great for. Thinner oil is better for all seasons the oil will be pumped out better everywhere and you won't have to warm up the engine as long when starting it in the morning. The 10-30 is thicker and may not get everywhere so quickly or at all and I recommend warming a car up at least 3min with 10-30. But hey it's up to you.
The 5W30 you are using now is fine. Going to a full synthetic 5W30 will increase the heat range to the upside, so I'd recommend that with warmer temps coming. You'll be just fine. I run full synthetic 5W30 in my Corvette and have had no problems...and where I live we get 90's on a regular basis in the summer. Make sure your coolant is mixed properly as well. Hope this helps.
Anything API certified and recommended by the manufacturer for you vehicle would be fine. For your vehicle 5-30 or even 10-30 should be fine.
5W30 should be fine for where you are at. Oil weight, or viscosity, refers to how thick or thin the oil is. The temperature requirements set for oil by the Society of Automotive Engineers is 0 degrees F (low) and 210 degrees F (high).

Oils meeting the SAE's low temperature requirements have a ';W'; after the viscosity rating (example: 10W), and oils that meet the high ratings have no letter (example SAE 30). An oil is rated for viscosity by heating it to a specified temperature, and then allowing it to flow out of a specifically sized hole. Its viscosity rating is determined by the length of time it takes to flow out of the hole. If it flows quickly, it gets a low rating. If it flows slowly, it gets a high rating.

Engines need oil that is thin enough for cold starts, and thick enough when the engine is hot. Since oil gets thinner when heated, and thicker when cooled, most of us use multi-grade, or multi-viscosity oils. These oils meet SAE specifications for the low temperature requirements of a light oil and the high temperature requirements of a heavy oil. That is what is meant by 5W30 or 10W30. When choosing oil, always follow the manufacturer's recommendation.

Im my opinion, synthetic oil is best for both low temp and high temp applications. Because it has an extended oil change interval it can actually be just as cheap to use as the old dinosaur oil. I run Mobil 1 and Mobil oil filters in my car and change them every 5000 miles. I could go 7500 but I always use a lower figure than recommended so my engines last forever.

Just changed coolant, but accidently use the funnel for motor oil. Coolant still good for 5 years?

Drained and refilled Prestone 50/50 premixed coolant.

Now theres a thin thin layer of oil residue on the surface of the coolant when looked at through the radiator opening. Dont feel like draining and refilling. Coolant still good for 5 years?Just changed coolant, but accidently use the funnel for motor oil. Coolant still good for 5 years?
The oil will attack all of the natural rubber hoses that you have in the cooling system and cause them to swell. Each morning until the oil is gone, take some paper towels and with the radiator cap off absorb as much oil as you can. Keep topping off the cooling system and it will be forced into the over flow tank. Once the radiator is clear, remove the over flow tank and completely clean it. Now top off the system and be more careful next time. Your not the first to do this and for sure will not be the last. Natural rubber hoses hate oil big time!Just changed coolant, but accidently use the funnel for motor oil. Coolant still good for 5 years?
It's probably not going to hurt anything.

The oil might soften the rubber hoses, but I doubt such a small amount would cause any problems.

Maybe let it sit overnight and when the oil rises and collects at the top, gently dab it with a paper towel to remove the film.
i would drain and filter with a coffee filter or cheese cloth and flush it, but im peticular about my fluids, but i bet it wouldnt do anything terrible if it was just run off from a funnel, now a qt or 2 might be bad, but ive seen people drive with mud in there from a blown head gasket for 200k so its your call really
No problem however make sure that the oil is not getting into the cooling circuit through a gasket leak or cracked head. monitor the situation.
I don't believe that amount of oil will hurt a thing.
That's not going to hurt anything at all.

Finally I would really like to know how many miles of driving to change synthetic motor oil, not regular oil?

I have heard people tell me that it makes no difference whether its synthetic motor oil or regular motor oil and I should change it every 3000 miles and then I have been told for synthetic to change it every 10,000 miles. However, I have never asked a professional this question. So what is the true answer please and thank you for your help. Finally I would really like to know how many miles of driving to change synthetic motor oil, not regular oil?
i work at a quick lube and for full synthetic it is best changed at 5000 to 6000 miles intervals its not the oil that breaks down its the additives that break down been doing oil changes for about 10 years now and we have to know what we are sellingFinally I would really like to know how many miles of driving to change synthetic motor oil, not regular oil?
The only way to be absolutely sure when to change is to have an oil analysis preformed by a lab.

The military and many large transportation companies have done this in the past. My personal experiance is not to go any longer than 12000 miles without using premium oil filters and a lab test. I suggest not going any further than the vehicle manufacturer recommends even with synthetics. For example in my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee I change every 6000 miles with a semi-synthetic blend oil. Jeep recommends 3000 mile for severe duty and 7500 miles for regular service intervals with a conventional oil. Always change the oil filter with the oil.
It all depends on your driving conditions, your lead foot, the environment, its hard to tell exactly when you should change your oil. However with synthetic, it is usually good for 5K - 10K, my car has a oil life system and it tells me when to change my oil, i have 33K on my car now, i bought it new and only have done 3 oil changes on it. But I'm not hard on it like my other car, I do put full syn in and change around 3500. If your in dusty climate you should change earlier than if not in one. There is no magic number, people use baseline numbers to make it easy to remember when it needs to be done, I ran a shop that serviced a fleet, and did all gas engines at 3K and all diesel engines at 5K, just to be safe and make sure over doing it not underdoing it.

Hope this doesn't confuse you more, but informs you more. If I was you stick to around 5K just to be on safe side.
3000K same as regular oil. the 10,000K is rediculous... i would never do that to my car, i do every 5000 with synthetic. After 7000K the synthetic oil looks like crap and feels like water, it's not lubricating very well. 5000K is still feels slippery coming out of the vehicle.
5,000 is best. synthetic is very costly and oil change intervals should be reflected on the price. why pay 4.50 a quart and change it 3,000 miles later? stick with 5,000.

What is the difference is the different weights of motor oil?

Like 10W30, 10W40, AND 5W40?What is the difference is the different weights of motor oil?
Basically it's how thick oil starts out as an how think it will get once heated.

For example, if you use 20W50, it means that it will start at a thinkness of 50 and ';thin'; down to a thickness of 20. Compare this this to 10W30, starts at 30 and goes down to 10.

90W gear oil for example doesn't change (I could be wrong here), it just stays at 90W.

For a very detailed description, check wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil#G鈥?/a>What is the difference is the different weights of motor oil?
They are called viscosity (thickness). You don't have to know much more than - just stick with the factory recommendation.

Ex-bf's cat peed on slate tile floor, how can I get the smell out and motor oil stain question?

I have a major clean up to do after my slob ex-bf moves next week. The major thing is his cat peed on my slate entryway and no matter what I clean it with it still smells. Does anyone know how I can get the smell out?

Also, if anyone knows how to remove the stains left after motor oil was spilled all over concrete and then soaked up, I have that little chore to do too. I've gone over it three times by grinding in crushed kitty litter and the sweeping up but you can still see an outline of where it was.Ex-bf's cat peed on slate tile floor, how can I get the smell out and motor oil stain question?
It might be harder to get the cat pee smell out after you've used different chemicals on it.

I don't know about pourous stone, but for most other things Nature's Miracle FOR CATS (not the regular kind and none of the knock-offs I've tried) works the best. You might have to try it a few times. I've found the best price on a gallon size at PetSmart.

Another suggestion would be to contact someplace that specializes in stone and ask them... I know they exist if not only to sell to contractors...

Good luck. Sounds like you also want to burn some sage around the place to cleanse it, some white candles, and maybe some pics of him.Ex-bf's cat peed on slate tile floor, how can I get the smell out and motor oil stain question?
You can use a spray of straight vinegar, or straight vodka, or ODOBAN (Wal-Mart under the Febreeze but costs half as much and really works). I have used all of these and they all work. As for the concrete, they have a cleaner called Krud Kutter in the paint isle that you can spray on the greased area. Let sit about 5 minutes then get a scrub brush and some elbow grease and it will come right off. I did this to my driveway when my grill dripped grease from the food on it. Wipe the excess with a wet rag or one of his favorite cotton shirts for not cleaning up his own mess.
You can try using straight white vinegar on the slate, or bleach water, then spray with Out which can be purchased in the pet dept. at Walmart, it may take several applications of the Out, just spray it on and let it dry..you may have to put a sealer on the slate once you eliminate the odor or at least get rid of most of the odor.

For the oil stain try Greased Lightening and a scrub brush and a little Dawn dish washing soap, this also may take several applications.
For the cat urine, white vinegar, peroxide (test for colorfastness first) or rubbing alcohol. Just pour it on and let it dry. Any residual smell from the vinegar or rubbing alcohol will dissipate quickly. You may have to do this a couple of times, but it does work.

For the motor oil stain, make a paste of laundry detergent and water and scrub into the stain and out past the edges a few inches. Let it sit then scrub it off with a stiff brush. Again, you may have to do this more than once, but let it dry for a couple of days in between scrubbings.
Cat or Dog urine stain and smell, first pour some Club soda on the stain then sprinkle some Baking soda on the club soda let it fizz when the fizzing stops then wipe it up with a paper towel, then rinse it with club soda again and wipe up with paper towel Good Luck

For removing Grease from a concrete floor or driveway, just spray with WD-40 spray then scrub with a stiff brush wait for about twenty minutes then just wash with hot water and laundry detergent and scrub again then rinse with warm water and then again with the hose Good Luck !

Or you can use Laundry detergent and some bleach scrub with a stiff brush then rinse with the hose Caution: Make sure you do not get this on any lawn or near any plants as it can kill your lawn or plants

    Good Luck !

What is the difference betwen lawn mower oil and motor oil?

Can I use motor oil in my lawnmower or will it hurt the engine? What is the difference betwen lawn mower oil and motor oil?
No difference at all. It's only the price that differs. but no, It won't hurt the engine. What is the difference betwen lawn mower oil and motor oil?
Not much...just the weight (viscosity- how much it sticks to the moving parts of the internal parts). If you look at a bottle of lawn mower oil and read the weight (SAE-05), you should be able to find motor oil with a similar weight. It shouldn't hurt it at all. Now if you are talking about mixing oil...that is different and I would stick with the product designed for the job. (Mixing oil is used with 2 cycle engines in order to help lubricate the moving parts of the engine). Good luck.
All mower engines require a HD oil...... (thats a HIGH DETERGENT oil) nd-30 is out of date... and is for water pumps, not engines anymore.

Engine oil for a mower, or car engine....., it'll do fine in either....

5w-30, 10w-30, 5w-40,10w-40, 15w-40...... all fine to use.... (be aware that a multi weight CONVENTIONAL may cause more consumption over a synthetic of the same weight or straight wieght.)

hd-30 is fine.... but thats it.. its FINE to use...., must not be used under 40 degrees F due to the fact it gets thicker, not thinner in the cold like a multi weight..., and protects just as good as a multi weight at operating temp...

Multi weights will guarantee a very good cold oil flow (which is when most of the wear occurs)
For the lawn mover it requires a non detergent oil it has a SAE rating you don't have to buy a bottle of oil that is labeled lawnmower oil just purchase a bottle of SAE 30 w motor oil and its the same thing 10w30 is a multi grade oil that has detergents for cleaning you don't want that
    the price
Lawn mower oil is SAE 30. Motor oil is, for example, 10W40 ot 10W50. They are different weights and viscosities. Any time you use an oil other than manufacturer's recommendations, you stand a change of damaging the engine. Don't use motor oil in your lawn mower.
If it is a 4-cycle engine, nothing. 2-cycle require 2-cycle oil.
Motor oil that goes in the crankcase is the same. if you have a mower that needs pre-mixed fuel then no.Pre-mix is the type where you mix 2 cycle oil and gas.

What is the gas to motor oil mixture for a puch moped?

i know some people say 50:1 or 32:1

i need to know in relation of ounces per gallon though... i don't understand how the ratio works.

just how many ounces of oil do i need for one gallon of gas? What is the gas to motor oil mixture for a puch moped?
Look honey, whether it's 50:1 or 32:1, you just divide 128 (that's the ounces in a gallon) by 50 or 32.

That would be 2.56 ounces per gallon for a 50:1 mixture, or 4 ounces for the 32:1 mixture. Just be sure you know which one it is.What is the gas to motor oil mixture for a puch moped?
You might as well start off on the right foot and find out what the

correct mixture is for the model and the year of your Puch.

I've searched over a few sites in the last couple of minutes and

    there are different opinions.

Have someone with Puch experience show you how to use the

gas cap as a measuring cup. It's been so many, many years now

I can't even remember the ratio myself....

    Good Luck with your Puch....
the ratio is 50:1 witch just means for every 50 gallons of gas you would add 1 gallon of oil, so just simplify that to one gallon
it,s 50:1 i had a moped called a krilder and that was the ratio .

Is synthetic motor oil worth changing to?

I'm looking to get more miles per gallon. I've heard that it helps. Anyone with real-world experience? Is synthetic motor oil worth changing to?
As long as you change your oil on a regular basis there is no need to switch. Some cars, such as Porsche's and BMW's come with it from the factory. They need to continue using it unless the owner wants to void the warranty. If your car didn't come with it then it doesn't need it. You'll end up paying more for synthetic and you won't save that much on fuel. Overall, you'll be spending more money when you're trying to save it. I've got over 220,000kms on my car and I haven't had it in the shop for any mechanical repairs. I've never once used synthetic because for an average vehicle it's totally unnecessary. Is synthetic motor oil worth changing to?
If your motor has been run for a long time on mineral oil, the change to synthetic may cause leaks. What you can do is use a blended oil, they have part synthetic and part mineral oil. You get the best parts of both worlds that way. Mineral oil is superior for ring sealing and the synthetic is best for lubrication.
It all depends. Newer cars have aluminum heads, higher compression, and cast aluminum blocks, so synthetic oil is better for them. But if you have an older car, stick with conventional. Many old cars cannot handle a sudden change to synthetic oil and will reject it, resulting in oil leaks. As a general rule: if you don't normally use synthetic oil, don't start; if you do normally use synthetic oil, don't stop.
yes because it helps out the engine.

Which conventional motor oil has the least breakdown?

I have been using Valvoline for many years and am now finding that it seems to be breaking down so much easier now. I still use a conventional oil. I haven't made the switch to a synthetic yet but I am looking into it. So my question is regarding a conventional oil right now.Which conventional motor oil has the least breakdown?
it has always been a good oil everyone well have there own say about what they like better... after driving and working on cars over 35 yrs ive yet to find any diiferants between any of them and ive used pretty much used all of them if you think its not working for you just pick another and you could also go up a weight like from 5w30 to 10w30 might help ive always used 10w40 in everything i used synthetic since it came out any ive not seen any differants but i guess thats good still should change it more offen than not so changing more off well help Which conventional motor oil has the least breakdown?
i have used pennzoil in all of my cars for as long as i have driven without a problem.

  • Can I switch to regular motor oil if I have synthetic in there now?

I had been using regular motor oil in my car, I had my father take it to have the oil changed the other day because it needed it and I have been busy- he had them put synthetic in there.

Can I go back to normal motor oil- I can't afford to spend $60 on oil changes! Can I switch to regular motor oil if I have synthetic in there now?
    Yes, sure you can.

These other guys don't know what they are talking about.

It is absolutely fine and safe to switch back to regular oil.Can I switch to regular motor oil if I have synthetic in there now?
Not an issue, but synthetic is far better. You can double and even triple your intervals between oil changes. Generally 5000 kilometres for conventional oil. With a good quality synthetic you can go at lease 10-15k. Synthetic oil doesn't break down. It becomes dirty due to the air filter, but I've gone 20k before a full change. Do the math and ask your self if you really can't afford it?

    Good luck.
It is not recommended to switch back. Once you go synthetic you shouldn't go back.

If you really wanna switch back, go with a synthetic blend, then the next change after that go with organic (regular) oil.

Some people argue this either way. It has always been said not to switch back and forth for whatever reasons.
Yes, you can, with no worries. 1 time with the synthetic is not going to bother anything. I would, however, recommend that you continue to use the synthetic because it is a better motor oil. More expensive though it is, in the long run, it is the superior choice.
it's fine to go back to regular oil and it won't hurt a thing, you can switch back and forth as many times as you want, just don't mix the regular oil with the synthetic, use either one or the other.
It's not that good to switch back and forth.

Is high mileage oil really any better for your car than regular motor oil?

I have a 2002 Neon that has 81,000 miles on it. Should I use high millage oil or is regular oil just fine when I get an oil change. The high mileage oil was more expensive so I was wondering if it really had any advantages.

Thanks. Is high mileage oil really any better for your car than regular motor oil?
There's no real advantage to you in using high-mileage oil.At 81000,your Neon's hardly started to wear in properly, and your seals and valves will benefit more from regular oil changes-[with filter]-than with any gimmicky high-cost oil that won't actually get to do it's job as your car hasn't DONE a high-mileage,and WON'T do ,prior to the next oil-change. Just keep the oil changed at recommended intervals, and make sure the filter is changed each time too,and your car will toddle along quite happily, sweetness. xxx

Is high mileage oil really any better for your car than regular motor oil?
On your neon NO dont spend for the high milage oil. you should be using 5w30 motor oil so your engine isnt working as hard. if you are concerned for the high milage add a can or bottle of slick 50 or the equivalant on a fresh oil change. the product caots this really slippery film on all surfaces that were hot enough to bond it to the metal. 1 treatment should be good for around a year and would help extend the life of the engine. that is provided you recognise great grandpa doesnt run like he did as a teen.drive reasonable and she will thank you.
older the car gets not much any type is better than any other maybe want to use a heavier weight
If your car is using oil or has very low oil pressure the high mileage oil will help.Otherwise keep using what you have been using.
Depends, if your car is using oil between oil changes you could try high mileage oil. Its formulated to minimize oil burning, has additives to keep seals pliable, etc. If your engine is in good shape, stick with the oil you are using.
It depends on the type of higher mileage oil that you are referring to. If you are talking about synthetic, there are some large advantages, but some drawbacks as well. Drawback-Expense,drawback-cannot mix oils,drawback-not always readily available! Positive-Longer between changing,Positive-cleaner burning,Positive-Less sludge and better lube qualities. So now, Make your decision, based on the facts

Can small amounts of used motor oil be burned in a household funace?

I change my oil about as often as I fill my 250 gallon heating oil tank. If I pour say 5 quarts of 10w40 in the 250 gallon tank, will it damage the furnace. Can small amounts of used motor oil be burned in a household funace?
Probably not, but I would not try it. It is better for the environment if you take it to a recycling place. Can small amounts of used motor oil be burned in a household funace?
Your home furnace CAN be converted to burn used motor oil. A friend of mine who ran a repair shop in upstate NY did just that; HOWEVER motor oil is heavier and it requires burner modifications to work right. You should contact some local heating system professionals and ask them about it.
I don't have much experience with home heating with oil but I do know that waste oil burners are very, very dirty. I don't think I would take the chance of clogging up my home furnace with nasty waste oil. There are a lot of contaminants in used oil. If you have an Autozone or similiar parts store, you can recycle your waste oil there. they'll take up to 5 gals per visit.
Without proper modifications, it will absolutely it will hurt your furnace.

I've been to school for this and the references are from the text book .

The problem is that oil needs to be atomized to burn properly. To achieve this oil is forced into a nozel that forces the oil to spray in a fine mist into the combustion chamber where it will burn.(1)

Any fine pieces of metal left in the used oil will lodge in the nozel and ruin it. Your standard furnace oil filter is not designed to handle the conditions of waste oil.

';Flame failure is one of the most common causes of a furnace explosion.';(2)

It could be setup by a professional or you could really filter the oil good but the cost to savings ratio is low and the chance of problems is high.
I'm no expert on this, but with that caveat in mind, to the best of my knowledge, what you will wind up doing is ruining your furnace. I believe heating oil is basically much the same as diesel fuel or kerosene.

Even clean motor oil is probably too thick to use. Dirty motor oil would probably gum up the jets in the furnace.

I don't think I'd take the chance in order to save a few bucks that could cost you hundreds in the long run.
i would not try it.. just recycle the motor oil...
first of all I'm am no expert about anything. That being said the garage were I work has an oil furnace as well and they usually burn the oil from the trucks when they change the oil they put it right in with the other oil. Just make sure there is nothing else in the oil. No water or any other fluids.

What causes engine coolant to get into my motor oil?

It may be water from the radiator. It is a 96 Chevy 1500 2wd small v8.What causes engine coolant to get into my motor oil?
Blown head gasket or leaking intake manifold. What causes engine coolant to get into my motor oil?
    Hello,

Well I can say it's not good !!!! A blown headgasket, a cracked cylinder. Has the car been over-heated ? I would drain the oil and radiator ASAP !!!! GO to advance auto parts and buy a can of engine block sealer and follow all directions exactly as it says!! I have repaired 3 cars this way and they are still ok. It is worth 50.00 to try before spending 500.00 or more to fix the head gasket. My opinion only !! Im sure someone will tell you it don't work, but , it worked great for me !! Good Luck !!!!!!
Generaly speaking there are two potential reasons for this, first the inlet gasket could have failed or the cylinder head gasket has failed.

    Ja.
Generally, it's a defective intake or head gasket.
your head gasket is blown. u need to replace it
There are a couple of answers for this one. Gm small v8 such as the 3.1 are notorious for the intake manifold to leak the coolant. It is quite the repair if done in a shop. It could also be the head gasket. However if it is you will be replacing the intake manifold gasket. Note if you have aluminum heads if the car has been overheated they need to be checked to make sure they are not warped. If they are warped and you try to repair without taking them to a machine shop you will continue to have problems.
Three possibilities , none of them good.....Blown head gasket, cracked head, or cracked block......

My 1976 AMC Matador has purged a little motor oil down into the exhaust and muffler- why?

After 12 years of inactivity(65,000 original miles) I brought it back to running and have already driven 200 highway and city miles. It always starts up just fine. The oil light comes on after 5 minutes idling and disappears when I give it some gas, returning when I let off the gas.My 1976 AMC Matador has purged a little motor oil down into the exhaust and muffler- why?
    This is two separate questions.

    1. Oil in the exhaust means the rings are most likely shot. Maybe some rust built up while it was sitting

    2. Oil light on means low oil pressure or bad sending unit

You're probably going to have to rebuild the motor. My 1976 AMC Matador has purged a little motor oil down into the exhaust and muffler- why?
First off if you had this problem before you put it in storage it could be a number of things wrong. However if everything was fine and working be fore you stored the car then you probably only have a clogged up oil sensor. Some times you can on clog them by removing them and spraying carb cleaner or brake clean in them to wash out the old oil. But, there is a slight chance the oil pump pick up is clogged. This is a screen on the end of your engines oil pump that filters the oil before it goes into your engines critical parts. I have seen some of these screens clog up really bad. This could do some serious damage to your engine if it is clogged and you continue to drive it. Check that sending unit out right away. If you clean it and you still loose pressure you really need to put a mechanical gage in place of the sender and check to see what your actual pressure is when the engine is up to normal operating temps and idling.

    Hope this helps
I am ASSUMING that you changed the oil, %26amp; filter ! ? If not, do so NOW, Leaving room for 1 pint of STP oil treatment ! Change the spark plugs ! Then fill the gas tank with 92, or 93 octane gas,and add 1 bottle of STP gas treatment. Drive it for about 200 miles ( the piston rings may be ';stuck';). I have been a mechanic for over 50 yrs. !

When or do I have to use Synthetic motor oil?

I have a 2006 Honda Accord Coupe with about 21,000 miles on it. Do I use synthetic oil to keep the engine running better or make it last longer? When or do I have to use Synthetic motor oil?
Synthetic oil will increase engine life, but it will also increase your expense in maintaning the car, change your oil about every 3500 miles and keep your air filter clean use good products and your car will lastWhen or do I have to use Synthetic motor oil?
Synthetic oil is good but it's not miraculous. You can use any oil, make sure you change it 4 times a year, 3very 3 months regardless of mileage. The kind of oil you wanna use just whatever you like. I like valvoline synthetics and semi-synthetics , like castrol too
Some cars require synthetic oil I would use it if i were to plan to sell the car in a couple years and i kept receipts for some reason people like to know that you were heavy on maintenace it makes the car more reliable somehow...but yeah synthetic is better but no determine time to start just try to keep doing it often now would be a good time to start

I prefer Omega 631 motor oil for petrol engine and Omega 643 for diesel engine ! Try it and compare, you will find quiter, smoother, more power, more stable , and saver for the long run. And can provide you the ture spec you need !
I prefer Shell Motor oil. I've known my wife wife for over 30 years %26amp; in that time she has only had 3 cars. Only 1 of those was purchased new. All 3 cars were kept on Shell products. The car she has now (car #3) is 22 years old %26amp; has 350,000 miles on it. It's getting hard to find parts for the car, but the engine still runs good.

How do I get motor oil off my saddle?

My horse had sweet itch and following someones advice on Q%26amp;A I painted him with motor oil.

The sweet itch is gone but I got oil all over my saddle jodhpurs and leather boots.

I managed to clean the oil off my boots by using petrol but now my black boots are brown,How do I get motor oil off my saddle?
Good heavens! You took the advice of someone telling you to paint the horse with motor oil? That is one of those real old home remedies that was used many, many, many years ago until about the 1960s as people began to wise up to the harmful health affects of prolonged skin exposure to motor oil when the oil companies started printing warnings on the motor oil containers, warnings that began with a statement something like avoid direct contact with eyes and repeated or prolonged skin exposure, and then that warning was soon followed with a more serious caution stating that exposure to used motor oil is known to cause cancer. But why the statement to avoid direct contact with eyes and repeated or prolonged skin exposure to fresh motor oil? After all, skin care products like mineral oil and vaseline are petroleum products. The answer to that is simple. There are no chemical additives in mineral oil and petroleum jelly, but motor oil which is used for lubricant in automobile engines has many chemical additives, some of which to inhibit corrosion and carbon and to help keep rubber engine seals pliable longer. I just don't understand how some people can be so foolish and trust some great-great-granddads home remedies to save a few dollars when it is now known that some of those remedies are harmful to the animals health. The next time you want to save a few dollars by treating sweet itch with a home remedy, I suggest you rub the horse down with a solution of olive oil and minced garlic. That was the old remedy my granddad used and it will not risk the horse's health. But I won't spare expense when it comes to caring for my horses so I prefer sweet itch lotions like Dermoline or Killitch. Good luck with your saddle. How do I get motor oil off my saddle?
Leather is porous so once something like an oil is in the skin, you cannot get it out without seriously damaging the material. Just as an aside, regardless of whether the sweet itch is gone, I would never put petroleum motor oil on my horse's skin. What were you thinking? Would you put motor oil on your head if you had dandruff? Just think of what that junk is made from. How could you do that to your horse. There are lots of things to clear up sweet itch that are safe for your horse and your jods and boots. A good rule of thumb: If I won't put it on my body or feet or nails, then I won't put it on my horse's body or feet or hooves. Pretty simple stuff and you always stay safe. Sorry about your saddle.
I can understand the use of the motor oil, you were trying to get your horse healthy and rideable. As one of the old ';great-great grandpas'; that read this column I may have tried the same thing. I have over the years seen the cheapo home remedies work when the high priced brands didn't.

I throughly clean my saddles a couple of times a year. I was taught to do this by a great grandpa/grandma saddle and harness makers in my area.

    1. use a common dish washing liquid (ivory, dawn etc.) wash the saddle down working the suds into the leather, rinse off. Let the saddle dry overnight, about 24 hours.

    2. use a glycrine(sp?) bar saddle soap make loose bubbly leather, rinse again. Let dry about 24 hours.

    3. Soap a thick lather of the saddle soap on the saddle, let it dry and buff with a soft cloth.

I know this takes a few days, but I have found it is well worth the envestment. I use a leather cleaner (Saddle New) spray a couple of times a week and wipe my tack down after riding. I have some tack that is 40 years old and still soft and pliable, and looks good.

    Good Luck
Yeah, I know WHO's advice you followed...MINE! Get some Murphy's Oil Soap and soap up your saddle, and your boots...Wash your jodpurs in COLD water if you haven't washed them yet. Try spraying them with Spray %26amp; wash on the oiled areas and THEN wash 'em...

I should have stated that you shouldn't ride your horse while the motor oil's on it, I thought that was common sense. Sorry.

Once you get what's on off, you're going to need to use an oil for the REST of your tack...Try Olive oil. and don't hit where the stain already is, just around the lighter areas of your tack.

As for your boots, once you get the oil off, then get some leather dye from Tandy's and touch up the brown areas and LET IT DRY!

I use Mobil 1 motor oil for my 2000 BMW 740il. How many miles can I drive before having to change it?

The car has done 150,000 miles and has no mechanical flaws that I know of.I use Mobil 1 motor oil for my 2000 BMW 740il. How many miles can I drive before having to change it?
The 3,000 Mile Oil Change MythBy Bill Siuru, Greencar.com provided by: According to a recent study by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, 73 percent of California drivers change their oil more frequently than required. This same scenario no doubt repeats itself across the country. Besides wasting money, this translates into unnecessary consumption of $100-a-barrel oil, much of it imported.

Using 2005 data, the Board estimates that Californians alone generate about 153.5 million gallons of waste oil annually, of which only about 60 percent is recycled. Used motor oil poses the greatest environmental risk of all automotive fluids because it is insoluble, persistent, and contains heavy metal and toxic chemicals. One gallon of used oil can foul the taste of one million gallons of water.

    » Article provided by GreenCar.com

It’s been a misconception for years that engine oil should be changed every 3000 miles, even though most auto manufacturers now recommend oil changes at 5,000, 7,000, or even 10,000 mile intervals under normal driving conditions.

Greatly improved oils, including synthetic oils, coupled with better engines mean longer spans between oil changes without harming an engine. The 3000 mile interval is a carryover from days when engines used single-grade, non-detergent oils.

For several years, automakers like General Motors, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have installed computerized systems that alert drivers via an instrument panel light when it’s time to change oil. As an example, the General Motor Oil Life System (GMOLS) analyzes the engine temperature, rpms, vehicle speeds, and other driving conditions to calculate the rate of engine oil degradation. Then, software calculates when the oil needs to be changed. Other systems work similarly.

Because of the many external conditions and parameters that have to be taken into account, calculating the precise maximum service interval using mathematical models alone is difficult. Now, Daimler AG has developed a more direct and precise way to monitor oil quality directly on board a vehicle.

Daimler uses a special sensor integrated into the oil circuit to monitor engine oil directly. Oil doesn’t wear out, but rather dirt and impurities cause oil to lose its ability to lubricate properly, dictating the need for a change. Daimler uses the oil’s “permittivity,” that is, the ability to polarize in response to the electric field. If the engine oil is contaminated by water or soot particles, it polarizes to a greater extent and its permittivity increases.

To evaluate the quality of the oil, permittivity is measured by applying an AC potential between the interior and exterior pipes of an oil-filled sensor to determine how well the oil transmits the applied electric field.

Because not all impurities can be measured with sufficient precision via the electric field method, Daimler also measures the oil’s viscosity to detect any fuel that may have seeped into the oil. Daimler researchers measure viscosity while the vehicle is in motion by observing the oil's side-to-side motion in the oil sump. The slower the oil moves, the higher its viscosity. This movement is registered by a sensor and the viscosity is calculated on this basis.

A single sensor, along with the information already monitored by on-board computers, is sufficient to determine the various parameters of the engine oil. Daimler will likely use the technology first on its commercial vehicles. Here, large oil reservoirs mean larger quantities of oil can be saved. Plus, a predicted 25 percent increase between service intervals and reduced downtime will be of interest to fleets, and thus justify the added cost of installation.I use Mobil 1 motor oil for my 2000 BMW 740il. How many miles can I drive before having to change it?
it varies based on driving conditions and driving habits. Highway miles, you can always go longer on intervals. City driving, shorter intervals. Short trips = shorter intervals, longer trips = longer intervals. Short trips where the engine does not get up to operating temp for a sustained time doesn't allow the engine to burn off contaminants in the oil and leads to extra condensation build up in the oil. Doesn't your car have an oil life monitor? This is a good indication of when to change your oil. You should also refer to your owner's manual for oil change intervals. New car manufacturer's are recommending longer oil change intervals ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 miles. See attached link to an article on Yahoo that states that 73% of California drivers change their oil more frequently than is required. I would not hesitate to drive 5-7000 miles on an oil change, checking the oil level frequently and adding when necessary. The best gauge for oil change intervals is the oil condition when you go to change the oil. If it's very black and thick, it's too long of an interval. If the oil is still somewhat clear looking, the interval is too short.
Your car has a monitor which tells you when it is time to change the oil and with synthetic, you can safely use it as your guide. I have 3 BMWs and that is what I do. My oldest one has over 260K miles on it and it is going strong and still does not use any oil. I routinely go at least 10K miles between oil changes.
Synthetic oil is just oil. It is man made and more pure. It has higher quality additives. But you can't really go high mileage with synthetic. Originally Mobil1 said that you can go 15K miles (that was back in the 70's). But since then they backed away from such claims.

The Synthetic oil has less impurities. So they

    (1) resist thermal break down

    (2) resist low temp freeze

    (3) resist sludge formation (from additives)

    (4) resist acid build up (from additives)

But those additives become depleted. Then it is just dirty oil.

If you really want to ';extend it'; and you do mostly high HWY miles, you might be able to go 5K mile to 7K miles (at most). My Audi was originally rated at 10K mile per oil change - but since then most people on the internet are screaming MURDER!

What grade number of motor oil to use on a high millage van?

I live in east Texas. About 4 days ago me and my dad did an oil change on hes chevy astro van, and we added 10w-40w, and it has over 160,000 miles. Did we add the right oil? Thanks for any advice!!What grade number of motor oil to use on a high millage van?
Synthetic oil would be the best. And also add Lucas Additive. What grade number of motor oil to use on a high millage van?
that depends on the situation. if it leaks or burns oil 1040 or even a 1030 high mileage will work well. if it does not consume oil at a high rate then stick with the 530. but an Astrovan with let me guess a 4.3 liter engine and a 4l60 transmission, i would go with the 1030. the 1040 should do well, it might drop fuel economy a little though.

    -OR-

Yes, the 10w-40w (detergent) oil is designed to stay thicker in warm/hot weather and to become slightly thin in cold weather. If the pcv valve is heavy with burnt oil residue you will want to change the oil MORE often to help remove the build up in the engine and change the pcv valve to ensure adequate breathing of the engine

30 weight in the summer or until its gets down to 30 degrees F.

Get on the internet and get some education for yourself. Don't depend on this or another site to do your homework for you. Get a vw manual like the ';Compleat idiot book by John Muir'; that is still available through Amazon.

Castrol 20w 50 would be my choice in an older high mileage engine, but that also depends on the temperature ranges where you live due to the changes in viscosity.
I called up Amsoil's Tech support line and they said to use a straight 30wt oil. I don't care what brand you use but you can read about their's in the links below.

What can be used to remove a motor oil spill from a light colored carpet without leaving an obvious stain ?

The spots are small spots and they were tracked in by foot. The carpet is beige. What can be used to remove a motor oil spill from a light colored carpet without leaving an obvious stain ?
    Hi,

I would use ';mineral spirits';, this is a solvent that degreases petro-oil from many things, and dries clean.

Have a few old towels, washcloths, or paper towels that can be discarded when you are done using them.

What I'd do is first take a clean old towel, use a section that is folded to make a ';dobber'; to put over the end of the can of mineral spirits, get this saturated.

Then ';dob'; the area of one spot until almost wet with spirits.

Then as this carpet gets wet, you'll see the oil dissolve.

Immediately start to take up the wetness with the dry towel to sop-up the oil/spirits mixture.

Repeat the process until carpet just looks wet, but has no oil residue noticeable.

The mineral spirits will dry residue free, in a short time.

One word of caution though, Don't smoke !!! and provide adequate air as to not let any fumes concentrate in your work area, as the area drys.

    This has worked for me.

Hope this helps, DaveWhat can be used to remove a motor oil spill from a light colored carpet without leaving an obvious stain ?
Spot Shot removes greasy/oily stains. I've used it for just such a purpose. Follow the directions on the can.
nothing no matter what you use it will only smear it may be you can ask a proffesional rug guy and he might no but from past experiance it wont come out tell your man to TAKE OFF HIS SHOES!!!!!!!!
What you need to do with this stain is use a solvent something you clean grease off with. Since you don't have the professional stuff try using orange glo or even 409. The most important thing to do is rinse the stain with a wet vac to remove all the reside, or the spot may come back.

If you have fingernail polish try acetate. Blot the chemical onto the spot and then remove with a towel and repeat, keep on doing this until stain is gone or you stop getting colour transfer. Then rinse the stain with a wet vac and water to remove all the reside,

from a carpet cleaner of 14 years
there are 2 product that i love one is lestoil and the other is dawn both will remove oil but you will need a carpet extracter to suck it out
try dish soap or liquid landry detergent. If that doesnt work - if you have a dollar tree store look for a product called Awsome. It is a great cleaner! You can also try shampoo for oily hair.

    Kathy
My husband spilled used motor oil on our white carpet a few yrs ago. I used EVERYTHING and nothing seemed to work....unitl I tried Goo-Gone. It's sold at Walmart. Spray or squeeze it onto the carpet and blot up with white paper towels. Wash with Tide and hot water when the stain is out to remove any excess cleaning product left in the carpet.

Emulsifying hand cleaner such as ';Goop'; or ';GoJo.'; Get the kind with no pumice. Rub it into the affected area generously. It creates an oil in water emulsion. Since the oil is suspended in globules of water, you simply shampoo the carpet. The globules become suspended in water and sucked up the hose. Oil all gone, no brutal cleaners.

Thank you all. What would I use to clean unused motor oil residue out of 1000 litre (260 gals) plastic water tank?
There is no way you can safely clean it out. There will always be some amount of the oil that will stay in the pores of the plastic.

Unfortunately it will never all come out.How do you get motor oil out of a coat?
I was going to suggest Dawn and the Goop.

But you can also use Hair Spray wet area and spray and let sit over night and wash
Get yourself some Goop or M30 waterless hand cleaner ( I like Goop best ). You can find it either in the auto section at stores like WalMart or at the dollar store. It is used by mechanics to get the grease off their hands and it is safe for fabrics, too. Take a glob and work it into the stain. Let it sit for 15-20 mins and launder as usual. You might see a shadow of the stain when you pull it out of the washer but it should disappear as it dries. Please do not put the coat in the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone. Heat will set the stain. You might need a repeat application depending on the extent of the stain.

LesToil ( available in laundry section ) is also good for cutting and removing greasy stains.
You can try using a can of coca cola. I used it on my husbands work jeans(he is a mechanic) and it takes it out of them.
Dawn dish washing liquid is a good grease cutter. Try rubbing some of that into the stain and wash and see what happens. Lestoil is also a good grease cutter, do the same, rub some into the stain and wash.

What is the best motor oil to use in my 06, 2.0 ford focus?, I want it to run for 300,000 mi?

I would like it to run as long as possible with oil changes at 3,000 mi intervals?, Thanx, Oh and the climate is westen oregon. What is the best motor oil to use in my 06, 2.0 ford focus?, I want it to run for 300,000 mi?
Any type of synthetic oilWhat is the best motor oil to use in my 06, 2.0 ford focus?, I want it to run for 300,000 mi?
A good quality engine oil is extremely important but pre-startup lubrication will do much more to extend engine life. Most engine wear occurs at startup and the racing pros install pre-oilers to eliminate that startup wear. You can do the same and easily extend the life of your engine to well beyond 500,000 miles under normal driving conditions and with regular oil changes. The Accusump pre-oiler oil reservoir system is one of the best and can be purchased at most speedshops. It is also very affordable and an easy one-line installation. The Accusump installation kit (sold separately) to access the engine oil flow by way of an input sandwich adapter which mounts between the spin on filter and the engine block makes installation very easy. Or you can plumb the Accusump pre-oiler oil reservoir into a remote oil filter, oil cooler, an unused oil galley plug, or install a ';T'; on the oil sender.
It's far more important to follow the maintenance schedule and change oil regularly than using the most expensive oil available.

Many expert will tell you, there isn't that much difference in oil from different companies. Today's lubricants are very advanced. Use the type of oil specified in your manual. Follow the ';severe use'; schedule, unless you are only driving on highways.

Other parts of the car will start to degrade way before your engine reaches 300,000 miles. Oil won't help you with any of those changes. You need to also pay attention to the cooling system. I'd suggest replacing and flushing coolant as required by the manual. Many owners ignore cooling. It is just as important as motor oil.
For a 3000 mile oil change interval, use any name brand oil in the proper viscosity, which I think is 5W-20 for a Focus. Use the Motorcraft oil filters, which you can find at any auto parts store or Walmart.

You can extend your oil change interval if you upgrade to full synthetic oil. 5000 miles or more is possible without problems.
The type of oil is not the issue. The biggest issue is how often to change it. I myself change oil every 2200 miles or there about. My car engines seem to last forever. Please remember, people getting rid of the car is not because the engine itself fails, it's other components fail that makes you frustrated.
read your manual most likly it 5w 30 but if its really hot all the time there you might want to run 10w 30 talk to a local mechanic they will normally give you that kind of info for free to get you to come to them for bigger problems and they will know what works best in your clim
MOBIL ONE, it's the best synthetic oil. you also wouldn't have to change your oil every 3k miles because the oil doesn't breakdown. I would say change the oil every 5-7 thousand miles with mobil one.
2006 ford focus calls for Motorcraft 5w-20. Those ford love this stuff!

    I always recommend Motorcraft Semi-synthetic.

If you change the oil every 3mo. and or 3,000 miles you should get the life that you want from your engine.

    Good luck
Mobil oil is recommanded for ford focus. but also depends on temperature. If it is winter use light oil and in summer use thick oil

Is there any one best brand of motor oil?

Or are they all pretty good for the most part? I've been using Kendall semi-synthetic. Is that decent oil?Is there any one best brand of motor oil?
There was a comparison done in Australia and results published in the automotive journal.

Mobil 1 full synthetic was voted as the best full synthetic oil. But, at $80 for a 5L bottle, its overkill for most motors.

From memory, a Fuchs oil came in as best semi synthetic and a Castrol came in as best mineral.

I have always used Valvoline in my car and found it to be ok. Every oil change I put a bottle of oil flush through, and I also put in a bottle of additive with the new oil.

I have stopped using Valvoline now, after switching to Nulon. It is excellent. I have picked up fuel economy, it holds oil pressure for longer, my motor runs smoother and when I change the oil at 5000, it is still clean. Is there any one best brand of motor oil?
Most major brands of oil are good quality. All will do what they are suppose to do. The main thing is changing it and the filter on a regular basis so no problems occur. .............UJN
i prefer penzoil, my father uses valvoline, it is a matter of taste as long as you use a true brand, and you keep up on the maintenance.

Kitty litter, so often recommended is only a modest assumption for success. TIN actually offers the most valid end result.

Which of these motor oil choices would be best for my car?

I have a 2003 Saturn Ion (2.2L I4) that just rolled over to 80,000 miles. I live in Minnesota, so it's subject to both extreme hot and extreme cold conditions. I've been running almost exclusively Mobil 1 fully-synthetic oil in it since about 20,000 miles. I've had great results with the Mobil 1, and I've felt it's been worth the extra money I've spent. Being that my car is getting up there in age, I've debated switching to one of the high-mileage oils to possibly head-off any leakage or seal problems that might creep up. Which out of these options would you suggest, and why?

1.) Just stick with Mobil 1

    2.) Switch to a conventional high-mileage oil

    3.) Switch to a fully-synthetic high-mileage oil

4.) Switch to plain-old conventional oil (keep in mind the

    temperature extremes)

5.) Another option not listed here....

Thanks for any insight you can give! For some reason this choice is one I'm having trouble making.Which of these motor oil choices would be best for my car?
Taking into consideration where you live and what you have said I think I would stick with Mobil 1. If you have had good luck with your car starting when it is cold there is no reason to change. I believe that Mobil makes good lubricants whether synthetic or conventional. If your engine continues to run well then there is no reason why you should change your brand of oil or maintenance schedule. If your engine starts to leak any type of oil I would consider either a thorough repair or switch to a less expensive synthetic/conventional blend. You don't want to be throwing money away by letting that expensive oil leak. Good luck.Which of these motor oil choices would be best for my car?
    Mate,

If I were in your shoes, I would switch to your 3rd option.
Since you've been happy with the synthetic, it is great stuff, keep using it but switch to a 10w30 or 10w40 now since your miles are getting up there. I would still use the 5w30 for the cold months.
I would stick with what has been working. If you start using a conventional oil, the seals and gaskets may not like it. Run a compression test on the engine. Just because the car is getting old does not mean its wearing out. I have a 98 GMC with over 250,000 miles.
stick with the synthetic for sure. i doubt there is much of a difference if any between reg and high mileage oil. except for the price. keep using what you have been if it is working fine and just be sure to change it every 3000mi and you should be fine.

also, assuming you are preforming your own oil changes, be sure you are doing all the maitenence required at each mileage interval such as chassis lubrication, trans fluid, wiper blades, tire rotation, etc.

What type of motor oil should i put into my 1985 Cutlass Supreme Brougham?

i own a 1985 Cutlass Supreme brougham it has a v6 engine. on top of the motor oil cap its says to use ';sf'; or ';sf/cd'; or ';sf/cc';. what do those numbers mean? And on the oil meter rod it has a long number sequence ending in a 'w'.What type of motor oil should i put into my 1985 Cutlass Supreme Brougham?
Any oil will do. SF was the standard that had to meet way back when the car was new, most oils exceed that standard by far now. Check the oil container and if the letter after S is further down the alphabet your good. What type of motor oil should i put into my 1985 Cutlass Supreme Brougham?
    SF = Service Factor

CD and CC is American Petroleum Institute classification for engine oil type.

On the dipstick the long numbers and letter is type of part number for dipstick itself. It has nothing to do with type of oil.

On your car, depending on mileage and climate, I would use 10w/30 or 10w/40 oil.

I've found a link for you on automotive abbreviations. Hope it helps you.
Use a common motor oil, 10W30 or 10W40 will do just fine. All the extra letters are ASE ratings which have long expired. Today's oil will work better.

What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?

A 1988 Toyota Corolla with automatic transmission was driven for months with regular engine motor oil in the transmission instead of transmission fluid. It was flushed out and changed and seems OK.What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?
maybe you got lucky but i'd start saving some money. tranny fluid and oil have very different properties. a small amount i'd be surprised to see it last very long. What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?
Most transmission rebuild shops use oil to soak the new parts in before they rebuild transmissions. The military uses motor oil in most of there vehicles so dont worry it will only effect the transmission in cold weather.
The fluids have different properties. Why was the oil put in rather than the correct fluid? How long since it was flushed?
haha it happens more than you think in automobiles. i work at sears auto tech and i had someone come in with a coolant issue and i found they had diluted tranny fluid with water 50/50. yeah it overheated slightly but no engine problems as of that time. you should be alright if you havent noticed any problems after the change.

I do alot of mechanical work. Can exposure to motor oil and cleaning solvents cause high enzyme levels?

I don't drink or do drugs but my enzyme levels or always 200+.I do alot of mechanical work. Can exposure to motor oil and cleaning solvents cause high enzyme levels?
I assume you are talking about liver enzymes. The solvents are probably the culprits, not the oil. The solvents are in the air and absorbed as you breathe, especially if you don't wear a proper mask when working. You'd have to get a lot of oil on you for a prolonged period to absorb the bad stuff, not nearly as fast as breathing it in from the solvents.

  • How many miles will Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5w-30 motor oil run without having to change it?

I drive a 2003 VW Passat. This is the oil I used when I had my oil changed last. The place I got my oil changed at said it would last for 10,000 miles, but I didn't know whether that was true or not. Any kind of Refference that anybody could find would put me at ease. Thank you.How many miles will Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5w-30 motor oil run without having to change it?
it all depends on how hard you drive the car, but 10,000 miles would be the longest i would go, I would get it changed around 7500 if i used a full syntheticHow many miles will Pennzoil Full Synthetic 5w-30 motor oil run without having to change it?
I would have it changed around 5,000 for best results.
You didn't mention what engine you have, but usually VW's need oil that meets one of their own specs such 502.00, 505.00, or 505.01. I don't know about Pennzoil synthetic but something like Amsoil Synthetic 5W-40 Euro Car Formula meets those specs: https://www.amsoil.com/lit/databulletins鈥?/a>

An oil meeting VW's standards will enable the car to go the full extended drain interval recommended by VW. Hope this can shed a little light on the subject. If you need more info on Amsoil synthetic oil or extended drain intervals, check out my website/online store:
