What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?

A 1988 Toyota Corolla with automatic transmission was driven for months with regular engine motor oil in the transmission instead of transmission fluid. It was flushed out and changed and seems OK.What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?
maybe you got lucky but i'd start saving some money. tranny fluid and oil have very different properties. a small amount i'd be surprised to see it last very long. What are the repercussions of having motor oil in an automatic transmission instead of transmission fluid?
Most transmission rebuild shops use oil to soak the new parts in before they rebuild transmissions. The military uses motor oil in most of there vehicles so dont worry it will only effect the transmission in cold weather.
The fluids have different properties. Why was the oil put in rather than the correct fluid? How long since it was flushed?
haha it happens more than you think in automobiles. i work at sears auto tech and i had someone come in with a coolant issue and i found they had diluted tranny fluid with water 50/50. yeah it overheated slightly but no engine problems as of that time. you should be alright if you havent noticed any problems after the change.
