Is there any reason to change vehicle motor oil after X years?

You hear it every day: change your motor oil after X years or Y miles. Is there any reason to change the oil after X years if very few miles have been driven?

Does motor oil go bad in its container? Does it go bad just sitting in an unused engine?

I get the ';change after Y miles'; part - that makes sense. But is there any reason to change it after X years if very few miles have been driven? Is there any reason to change vehicle motor oil after X years?
no, if your motor is not being put through any strain then there is no reason to worry unless we're talking 1yrs or something because additives in the oil will break down over time,so at least change the oil before you drive it again. What you hear about x years or y miles is based on an average person driving so many miles in a three month period or whatever.of course all that varies with type of use and age and condition of the vehicleIs there any reason to change vehicle motor oil after X years?
Oil (except synthetic) NEEDS to be changed every 3000miles or 3 months. The blowby gasses in your engine combine with oil to create an acid. As you may know, acid is especially harmful to soft metals. Your main bearings are made of soft metal and are constantly submerged in the oil. They are also among the most crucial bearings in the engine since they bear the horsepower-making responsibilities and seal the oil inside the crankshaft to be pumped to the rest of the engine.

If you need to store an engine unused for an extended period there are procedures to prevent harmful side effects. The best one you can do is to change the oil right before storage and add an oil preservative such as Seafoam in accordance with the label.
one time i didnt change my motor oil for a long time like maybe 6 months or a year over due and the engine blew up. so yes you need to change it every 3000 miles. and if you dont drive the car then still every 3 months or so
If oil is allowed to sit in an engine, it combines with condensation, to create sludge...

new oil in a sealed container, does not go bad....
3 mos or 3,000

oil breaks down - just sitting or driving
