What does the numbers stand for when it comes to motor oil?

What is the difference with motor oil when it says 10W40, 10W30, 20W5, and so on? What does the numbers represent? And does it really make a difference what motor oil you put in your car? Is synthetic motor oil better? If so why? What does the numbers stand for when it comes to motor oil?
10w-30 means this oil is only a 10 for viscosity (it is thin) but when it heats up it will perform as a 30w oil but it does not get thicker. if you live where it is cold you need the 10 viscosity to easily start your car without damaging your engine. most car makers suggest 10-30 for their vehicles.

------never mix oils. don't buy a 10w and a 30w to mix them----

------the 10 does not mean at 10degrees and 5 does not mean at 5degrees

synthetic is the best in winter for cold COLD places... because oil turns to tar in your motor and that is why we warm up our car before we drive it in winter to thin out th oil so we don't blow the motor... but if you use synthetic it never freezes because it isn't real oil!!!

47 CANADIAN winters under my belt.... I speak with cold hard facts....What does the numbers stand for when it comes to motor oil?
pertains to cold and heat

0 w 20 = zero degree's to 20 according to manufacturers spec

5 w 20 = five degrees to 30 thickness according to manufacturer

5 w 30

10 w 30 ten degrees lowest temp to 30 thickness

10 w 40 10 degree's lowest outside temp to thckness which in some cases is good if you have an older car with worn piston rings, this cushions the worn section of the cylinders

Now 0 is very good in winter, we want that oil real thin to quickly make it to the top of the pistons to lubricate as fast as possible, to avoid extreme wear. 5 is good to, but not as fast to pump when very cold.

I usually use 5W20 for my car in summer and 0w20 or 30 in winter. What I want is immediate lubrication here.
Viscosity of the oil. In a truck I would recommend 10W30, but that is in OK. Synthetic is a little better because of all the additives that are put in it.
